What is the Kindle?

In 2010, the top selling product on Amazon was the Kindle. This seems fitting, of course, as the Kindle is made by Amazon, but you also have to recognize that Amazon sells more than just their own products. In fact, some of the other top-selling items of 2010 were the iPad and the iPhone. That means that more Kindles were sold on Amazon last year than iPads or iPhones! There are still a lot of people who do not quite understand the Kindle - what is it, what does it do, why on earth is it so popular - but if you are one of these people, it is time to learn a few things about the Kindle.

One complaint many non-buyers have about the Kindle goes something like this: "I don't like the way my eyes feel when I look at a computer screen for a long time." Reading a Kindle is not like reading a book on a computer screen; in fact, reading a Kindle is just like reading a book! Each page of the Kindle is written in electronic ink, and otherwise the Kindle is non-electronic the whole time you read. It has no computer glare to hurt your eyes; no annoying lighting!

Furthermore, many people claim that they could not read on a Kindle because they enjoy underlining when they read a book. While it might not feel quite the same as underlining in a book, the Kindle actually enables you to "highlight," "underline," and even make notes and bookmark anything in the book.

Lastly, a lot of people claim that they don't want to lose all the books they purchased if their Kindle somehow malfunctions. But actually, Kindle users are protected against this, because Amazon stores every purchase online and allows users to retrieve these purchases if their Kindle is lost or broken.

Of course, there are many people who will never replace actual books with a Kindle. But even for such people, the Kindle can still be a good investment. After all, the Kindle makes business trips and vacations a whole lot easier - slip the Kindle into your bag and leave all those bulky books at home. Besides, the Kindle is really not so different from a real book.
